Exploring is that section of the Boy Scouts of America designed
to expose high school students to career fields before they make a commitment to college.
The Madison Heights Police Department has sponsored a Law Enforcement Post since 1976, and it is currently overseen by
Sergeant Stephen Worton.
The primary purpose of the post is to
provide members with situations simulating real life law enforcement experiences to assist with their "exploration". The Madison Heights Post is chartered with the Boy Scouts of America as Post #1551.
Explorers ranging in age from 15 to 21 years old
perform a variety of duties. They dispatch for the Police Reserves, work
traffic control at special city events and hold membership meetings
twice a month, during which they receive training for the many
competitions in which they participate. Like the Police Reserves, the
Explorer Post is a highly structured unit with written rules and
regulations controlling post operations and member behavior. Members
wear a uniform that is uniquely different from the Police Department’s
other uniforms.
28 members who donate
their time to serve the community at established affairs such as the
Memorial Day Parade, Fourth of July fireworks, community fairs, and
festivals.
